At Waterbury Hospital we encourage and support breastfeeding as the ideal way to nurture and feed a newborn baby. The staff is specially trained to give parents the information and support they need to get breastfeeding off to the best start. Practices such as skin-to-skin contact, early breastfeeding, and rooming-in with the baby during your hospital stay all help to support and enhance the natural processes. Our staff includes Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to help new moms work through any difficulties they may experience with breastfeeding. In cases where breastfeeding is not possible, we offer information and assistance with alternative feeding methods.
If you have decided to breastfeed, or are unsure about what feeding method to choose, we encourage attendance at our Prenatal Breastfeeding class. It is offered monthly, and is free of charge. If interested, you can register on our website.
After discharge, we offer phone support and a weekly Breastfeeding Support Group. Attendance at the support group is free of charge and there is no need to register. The group is designed to provide mother-to-mother support, and is facilitated by an IBCLC. For moms that require more intensive evaluation or assistance, we can provide referrals to lactation resources in the community.
At Waterbury Hospital our goal is to provide all mothers who choose to breastfeed the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and maintain breastfeeding, for as long as they like.
