Core Rotations
Pharmacy Operations
During this period the resident will become acquainted with the distributive functions and oriented with aspects of pharmacy in the hospital. The resident will become familiar with the pharmacy department’s policies and procedures, the physical facilities of both the pharmacy and the hospital, and computer order entry of physician orders. The resident will demonstrate the ability to prepare IV admixtures, including batch preparations, TPNs, and chemotherapy.
Internal Medicine
The resident will provide pharmaceutical care to patients admitted to the medical/surgical floors where the patients’ pharmacotherapy regimens and therapies are individualized to meet the specific needs of the patient. There will also be opportunities to participate in discharge planning and provide patient education and counseling to assure the best possible outcome for the patient.
Pain Management
The resident will be exposed to a wide range of pain syndromes including neuropathic, orthopedic, rheumatologic and chronic pain syndromes. They will participate in pain rounds, multidisciplinary rounds and direct patient care interactions through pain consults. In addition, the resident may have the opportunity to develop evidence based protocols, deliver education/training to patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals on the optimal use of medications.
Critical Care
The resident will train to provide pharmaceutical care for the ICU patient. Duties include; evaluating pharmacotherapy regimens for appropriateness, providing drug information and recommendations on rounds to nurses and physicians, and acting as a liaison between the central pharmacy and medical team. The resident should maintain patient specific information for continuity of care upon transfer to other floors.
Emergency Medicine
The resident will be a member of a multidisciplinary Emergency Department team. The resident will be exposed to and become familiar with a wide variety of emergency medicine topics. Along with participating in the care of acutely ill emergency department patients, the resident will also develop an appreciation for the role of the emergency department pharmacist in promoting safe and effective medication use in the ED.
Psychiatry
The resident will be involved in the care of the patients on the inpatient psychiatry unit and in the outpatient setting while assessing and optimizing pharmaceutical care. Pharmacy Administration The resident will be given the opportunity to work with the director of the pharmacy department participating in and understanding the day to day responsibilities and duties involved in such a position.
Pharmacy Informatics
The resident will be trained in the application of pharmacy informatics with opportunities in build tools and programming.
Nutrition
This rotation will allow the resident the opportunity to develop skills in patient assessment and monitoring for parenteral and enteral nutrition.
Pharmacy Staffing (longitudinal)
The resident will be given the opportunity to staff one evening a week and every third weekend for a well-rounded residency experience.
Ambulatory Care (longitudinal)
The resident will attend once weekly throughout the year to review and optimize pharmacotherapeutic options for outpatients in the Anticoagulation clinic, Diabetes clinic, Pharmacy Referral clinic and Bone Health clinic.
Elective Rotations
Pulmonary Medicine
The resident will participate in the care of patients with various pulmonary diseases while rounding with a pulmonologist in the hospital as well as seeing patients at the office. The resident will become familiarized with common pulmonary disease processes and participate in choosing the appropriate treatments.
Repeat a Core Rotation
The resident may also take the opportunity to further develop their clinical skills and competency in a particular specialty area by repeating any one of the above listed, primary core rotations.
