Class of 2015

A rich history of training excellent internists for over a century

In the early 1950’s and 1960’s, Dr. Joseph Bizzozero Sr., with his training and relationship with Yale University, saw the opportunity to make a Waterbury Hospital a center for medical education in the state. Our first internal medicine program was founded by Drs. Thomas Amatruda and George Thornton, and thrived for many years. Numerous graduates have gone on to make major contributions to medicine throughout the years.

For over two decades, Waterbury Hospital had been the major teaching site for the Yale Primary Care Residency Program. In 2012, Yale-New Haven Hospital completed a merger with the other hospital in New Haven creating two campuses less than a mile apart. As a result of this expansion, the Yale Primary Care Residency Program was transitioned into this second campus in 2014.

Simultaneously, Waterbury Hospital has become the primary site of a new Yale-sponsored internal medicine training program, Yale-Waterbury Internal Medicine Residency Program. The mission of the program is to train physicians to provide compassionate, evidence-based, high-quality care in an atmosphere that promotes excellence, scholarship and life-long learning.

The residency curriculum includes the extensive resources of Yale’s preeminent medical center and the supportive collegial environment of Waterbury Hospital. Resident physicians in the program are based at Waterbury Hospital and Chase Outpatient Center, but partake in core and elective rotations at Yale-New Haven Hospital as well as participate in research and global health opportunities through the Yale School of Medicine and Yale/Stanford Johnson & Johnson Global Health Scholars Program, respectively.

Moreover, our new affiliations with the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University and University of Connecticut Health Center provides a wealth of even opportunities for Waterbury Hospital to enter a new century of medical education and innovative medical care.
