Among the many advantages offered to the residents in the Yale-Waterbury Program is the opportunity to learn medicine in a range of settings that provides in-depth and comprehensive training in internal medicine. Residents are confronted with the full range of challenges faced by on-the-job clinicians every day.

Because there are no fellowship programs at Waterbury Hospital, our trainees care for patients through direct collaboration with senior clinicians, specialists, social workers, therapists, nurses and ancillary staff allowing them to hone their leadership skills and to fully comprehend the demands and challenges of their work in ways that nothing else could.

After completing their training, residents will have acquired the skills and knowledge to become competent and independent internists, well-positioned to pursue careers in whatever setting and niche of medicine they choose.

Waterbury Hospital has a rich history of training excellent internists. For over two decades, Waterbury Hospital has been the major teaching site for the Yale Primary Care Residency Program.

In September 2012, Yale-New Haven Hospital completed a merger with the other hospital in New Haven, creating two campuses, less than a mile apart. As a result of this expansion, the training site for the Yale Primary Care residency program will move to the Yale-New Haven Hospital campus, effective June, 2014. Simultaneously, Waterbury Hospital will become the site of a new Yale-sponsored Internal Medicine training program; we will be conducting interviews this Fall for our first (2014-15) intern class. The residency curriculum will include the extensive resources of Yale’s preeminent medical center and the supportive collegial environment of Waterbury Hospital’s training site.
