Why is UConn Health Waterbury Hospital conducing a CHNA and what is the process?

UConn Health Waterbury Hospital views the CHNA as a core expression of its mission and its commitment to Community-First Care under the UConn Health Community Network. The process is intentionally inclusive, integrating quantitative data (such as the DataHaven Community Wellbeing Survey, US Census and data from Connecticut agencies such as Department of Public Health, Office of Policy and Management, State Department of Education and the Waterbury Equity Report) with qualitative insights gathered directly from residents. By bringing together data-driven evidence and lived experiences, the CHNA helps ensure that hospital resources and community health improvement strategies are responsive to the priorities, needs, and perspectives of the people and communities most affected.

The CHNA process, so far:

  • Starting in May, UConn Health Waterbury Hospital conducted 12 focus groups in Greater Waterbury including three in Spanish.
  • On July 23, more than 300 community leaders and stakeholders were invited to participate in a Key Informant Meeting that took place at Waterbury Hospital.
  • A public hearing will allow for opportunity to present the draft CHNA report and collect comments from the community and stakeholders.
  • Next the CHNA is finalized, published and shared.
  • CHNA will help UConn Health Waterbury Hospital compile a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) to address priorities identified in CHNA. This document will also be made public and shared.
