Program Introduction

UConn Health Waterbury Hospital is a 357-bed community teaching hospital and a member of the UConn Health Community Network, which provides care across a diverse range of inpatient, outpatient, and specialty services. The hospital's Emergency Department is a Level II Trauma Center with advanced certification as a Primary Stroke Center, serving a broad and complex patient population.

The Department of Pharmacy is a highly automated practice environment staffed by more than 30 pharmacy professionals. Clinical pharmacy services are well established and integrated throughout the organization, with dedicated pharmacist involvement in Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pain Management, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Ambulatory Anticoagulation Management. This diverse practice environment provides residents with extensive opportunities to develop clinical expertise, interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and leadership abilities across a wide range of patient care settings.

Program Purpose

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Residents who successfully complete the program will be prepared for board certification in pharmacotherapy and pursue postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
