WATERBURY AND MANCHESTER MEMORIAL HOSPITALS NAMED AMONG THE NATION’S TOP HOSPITALS FOR EQUITY, VALUE AND OUTCOMES

Published:

Waterbury Hospital and Manchester Memorial Hospital have been named among the top-performing hospitals in the United States in the 2025 Lown Hospitals Index, recognized for excellence in equity, value, and patient outcomes.

Despite challenges facing hospitals nationwide—including staffing shortages, rising costs, and potential Medicaid reductions—both hospitals demonstrated a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, socially responsible care. They are among the top hospitals out of more than 2,700 nationwide to earn a spot on this year’s Lown Institute Honor Roll.

Waterbury Hospital ranked 114th, placing it in the top 4% nationally, while Manchester Memorial Hospital ranked 820th, in the top 30%.

  • Waterbury Hospital received an “A” grade in social responsibility, along with A grades in clinical outcomes, cost efficiency, pay equity, and inclusivity.
  • Manchester Memorial Hospital also received an “A” in social responsibility, and earned top marks for patient safety, clinical outcomes, and cost efficiency.

“We are proud to be recognized for not only delivering excellent clinical care, but for doing so in a way that values equity, affordability, and inclusiveness,” said Deborah K. Weymouth, President and CEO of Eastern Connecticut Health Network and Waterbury HEALTH. “These rankings affirm our mission to serve our communities with integrity and compassion—especially in today’s challenging healthcare environment.”

The Lown Hospitals Index, developed by the independent Lown Institute, is the only national ranking that evaluates hospitals on social responsibility, using unique criteria such as community benefit, equitable pay, and responsible use of medical resources. The methodology draws from public data including Medicare claims, CMS patient experience surveys, and more.
