WATERBURY HOSPITAL WOUND CENTER USES PATIENTS OWN SPRAY ON SKIN TO HEAL WOUNDS

Published:

Waterbury Hospital Wound Center is the first wound center in Connecticut to offer a cutting-edge spray-on skin treatment to treat complex wounds. The technology called RECELL® Spray-On Skin™ Cell treatment is an advanced, personalized solution that uses a patient’s own skin cells to create a spray-on skin solution that is used to cover and rapidly heal complex wounds. A small sample of the patient’s  healthy skin is removed and processed with specialized equipment to create a spray-on solution of r their own activated skin cells. Once applied to the wound, these cells stimulate healing and natural skin regeneration. The spray-on skin cells contain activated keratinocytes, which play a key role in fast and complete skin regeneration.

“This is great news for patients who can be going through one or two, 30-minute treatment sessions with faster healing and much better results. It’s impressive for the fact that it requires minimal donor skin,”  said Dr. David Knight, Waterbury HEALTH surgeon and co-director of the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Waterbury Hospital.

The procedure requires 1 cm² to treat up to 80 cm² of wound. Since it was made available to patients, several Wound Center patients have completed treatment with great results. The procedure can benefit patients with burns, trauma-related wounds, or chronic skin condition, this treatment offers a new path to healing.

The Waterbury Hospital Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine cares for patients with complex or non-healing wounds, traumatic injuries with services including hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, limb preservation and complex wound care.
