WATERBURY HEALTH TEAM PART OF MEDICAL MISSION TO GUATEMALA
Waterbury HEALTH helped sponsor medical mission trip
A group of four providers from Waterbury HEALTH affiliate Alliance Medical Group recently returned from a weeklong mission to Guatemala. Dr. Kweku Sam, pediatrician, Jill Zabit, pediatric APRN, Jen Klepps, LPN and Roberta Paternostro, LPN were part of a 20-person team of medical volunteers as part of Crossroads Outreach Medical Mission International (COMMI). Waterbury HEALTH team members work in Middlebury and Southbury.
Waterbury HEALTH helped sponsor the mission to Esquipulas, Guatemala. The medical team was led by Dr Faustinus Onyirimba whose medical practice is affiliated with a sister network, Eastern Connecticut Health Network.
This was a first mission to Guatemala for the Waterbury HEALTH team following a devastating earthquake in that country. As part of this mission, The Crossroads Outreach Medical team saw an average of 300 patients a day, some of whom walked several hours to see a doctor. In one instance part of a group visited patients who live and work at a land fill. Besides medical care, the group provided meals to all patients.
“We encountered such poverty and need in Guatemala, but also wonderfully welcoming and grateful people. We are so humbled by this experience,” said Dr. Sam.
Since 2011, COMMI has conducted annual medical missions to Guatemala, offering free clinics to indigent people of Esquipulas, helping over 8000 patients.
